If life were a storybook, we would probably choose to skip the first few chapters of Wesley Wee’s. If his life were a movie, we would probably close our eyes for the first half of it. When I read Wesley’s story for the first time, it was heart-wrenching and almost unimaginable. It was fraught with hardships and difficult experiences that we would not wish on anyone. And yet, many of us would be unable to close the book or pause the movie because above it all, his strength and perseverance greatly overshadowed the adversities in his life.

Now, you might be wondering: What’s so special about this Wesley Wee?

Victor is Empowering Communities to Maximize Their Contributions to Society

Post MBA, Victor took the leap of faith and joined Fairmarch an online marketplace for socially and environmentally responsible products.

The initial plan was simple: get his MBA, build networks and find a job in a big company. However, the time in Beijing as well as his entrepreneur-classmates changed his perspective. Fairmarch started to make sense and what excited Victor was the opportunity to steer the business’s growth in an industry where people were starting to pay more attention to social and environmental issues.

It’s not easy running a start-up and this has been a steep learning curve. Looking back, Victor believes that it is important to stay focused and not be afraid to fail as you can learn from your mistakes.

Raffles’ banded langur swings onto Jane Goodall Institute Singapore

“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” – Jane Goodall

Did you know that the Raffles’ banded langurs, which are native to Singapore, was discovered by Sir Stamford Raffles almost 200 years ago?

These furry black-and-white creatures with white rings around their eyes are shy creatures and rarely seen. Though once common in the 1920s, they have been threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation and urban development. Today, the species is critically endangered with about 60 monkeys left in Singapore. As we celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May, let us consider the difference that we can make to conserve what we have for future generations.

Find out more or get involved in some of these efforts led by Jane Goodall Institute (Singapore) here.
