Kick Off Your Chinese New Year Feast With Social Impact

Chinese New Year is an exciting occasion for our differently-abled team. It gave us an opportunity to get together for a meal after so long, being socially isolated during the Covid-19 crisis. We made our way to Iron Supper Nori, a home-grown restaurant that hires people with special needs and intellectual disabilities. It also channels part of its profits to support the underprivileged.

After arriving at the restaurant, which is nestled in the quiet and charming housing estate of Macpherson, we were hosted by a friendly restaurant manager, Aunt Agnes. As expected, she introduced a few of their time-limited CNY dishes. If you are looking for a unique menu that offers fusion dishes, it is for you. Think Western-styled tomahawk steak that is  combined with the traditional Chinese dish of pen cai.

Yusheng

A traditional Chinese New Year dish that is a must-have for celebrations, it symbolises good luck, good health and prosperity. Drizzled with plum dressing, it gives a tangy kick in your mouth. It can serve 8 people.

Tomahawk Pen Cai

It will make a heavenly dish for meat and seafood lovers. A popular dish Chinese New Year casserole-style dish, it has been part of the celebrations traditionally With generous servings of jumbo prawns, scallops and abalone in thick gravy, it’s sure to whet your appetite.

It also comes with grilled pork tomahawk and deep-fried pork tonkatsu which bears a  resemblance to Western and Japanese dishes. Where else can you get a combination of both culinaries?

The pork tomahawk can be cut into slices for easier eating. There are little fats at the ends which melt in your mouth. Ever, Victor couldn’t resist it and ate it  with his hand!

Dipped into brown sauce, the pork tonkatsu is succulent. And oh, it also tastes good with fiery chilli sauce. Have plenty of water on stand by if your threshold for spicy dishes is low.

Half Spiny Lobster Paella

It is one of the dishes that stand out as it is not commonly offered on Chinese New Year menus at restaurants.

One look at the appetizing dish, and you couldn’t resist digging into it. Among many mussels, squids and prawns, the lobster is the highlight as the dish name implies. The grilled lobster meat with cheddar cheese is so juicy. It is a bonus for seafood lovers who also love cheese!
